Welcome to the first ever dumbdrummer podcast. Today I talk with Jacob Slichter, one of my mentors and the extraordinary drummer from the well-known rock band Semisonic. Jake is also a writer, a cultural and political humorist and critic, and one of the most engaging conversationalists I know.
In 2005 Jake delivered his own huge hit, the book So You Say You Wanna Be A Rock And Roll Star. It’s a telling and sometimes hilarious look at what happens just before and during one’s time in the spotlight. And it shows how a kid who picks up a pair of drumsticks can grow up to pick up a platinum record.
Among other things, we explore how Jake faced his serious insecurities as a drummer, how his writing is deeply informed by musical composition, how we both discovered our greatest creative gifts in our technical limitations, and what it’s like being married to a another full-time writer, poet Suzanne Wise. Thanks for listening.
